GUIDE · GAME CONSOLES

Repair or replace a game console?

No power, no picture, or a disc drive that won’t read? A dead console isn’t always a lost cause. Many faults on current systems are a worthwhile board-level or component repair. This guide walks through the decision honestly, for current supported systems (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Steam Deck).

The questions that decide it

Is it a current, supported system?

We repair current supported systems: PlayStation 5/4, Xbox Series/One, the Nintendo Switch family, and Steam Deck. We don’t repair vintage or off-brand consoles, or standalone controllers. If yours is a current system, a repair is often worth considering before replacing.

Repair cost vs. a replacement

Console faults usually need a diagnosis, so the price follows inspection. A $50 diagnostic deposit applies at check-in and goes toward your repair. Because current consoles hold value and can be hard to find, a board-level repair (like PS5 HDMI) can cost less than replacing the system. We confirm the price after we inspect it and get your approval before any work.

Your saves and data

Back up your saves where you can before service. We take reasonable care, but we can’t guarantee saved data during a repair.

Common console decisions

  • No picture / HDMI: a board-level repair we perform after inspection; see PS5 HDMI repair. Eligible console repairs carry a 1-year warranty.
  • Won’t power on: several possible causes; we evaluate before recommending a repair.
  • Overheating / loud fan: cleaning, thermal service, or a fan repair, depending on what we find.
  • Won’t charge (Switch / Steam Deck): often a charging-port repair.
  • Disc drive or storage: read/eject issues and storage faults on supported systems.

When repair is usually smart

  • It’s a current, supported system with a contained fault.
  • A board-level repair costs less than a replacement.
  • The system is otherwise healthy and does everything you need.
  • The repair carries our 1-year console warranty.

When replacing makes more sense

  • It’s a vintage or unsupported system we don’t service.
  • Multiple faults on an older unit.
  • The estimated repair approaches a replacement.

If you’re replacing, you can browse available New and Certified Refurbished consoles, each with a 1-year warranty against defects. Your current console may also be eligible for Sell / Trade after an in-person inspection. Final offers depend on the console’s model, condition, functionality, account-lock status, included components, and other inspection findings. Still unsure? Call your local store.
