Repair or replace a MacBook?

Macs tend to hold their value, so repair is often worth it, but not always. This guide walks through the same factors our technicians weigh, honestly and without pressure. We repair Macs as an independent local shop; we don’t imply Apple authorization or certification.

The questions that decide it

Age, condition, and how you use it

A well-kept Mac that’s still fast enough for your work is usually worth maintaining; an older one showing several unrelated issues is closer to the end of its useful life. Match the decision to the job. If your everyday work fits the Mac you have, a targeted repair or an SSD/memory upgrade (where serviceable) can keep it capable for years.

Repair cost vs. a suitable replacement

The fair comparison is the proposed repair price for your Mac against the full cost of a suitable replacement, including any setup, software, accessories, or data-transfer work that may be needed. Many Mac repairs require diagnosis before a precise repair price can be confirmed. Start with a repair quote or bring the Mac in so we can evaluate the problem and explain the available options. A $50 diagnostic deposit is collected at check-in and applies toward an approved repair.

Your data

Back up with Time Machine or your preferred method before service. If the Mac won’t start and the files matter most, tell us up front; data recovery is a separate service with a free initial estimate and no guaranteed outcome.

Common Mac problems

  • Cracked or failing screen: a replacement display for supported models, so a cracked screen doesn’t mean a new Mac.
  • Battery that won’t last: a replacement battery with a 1-year warranty on the battery and labor.
  • Storage or macOS problems: full drives, slowdowns, and software issues where a repair, upgrade, or reinstall is the fix. Software work has no ongoing warranty.
  • Won’t power on / charging: several possible causes, so we evaluate before committing.
  • Liquid on a Mac: don’t keep charging or powering it on. See liquid damage repair; outcomes aren’t guaranteed.

Hardware repairs carry a 1-year warranty on the installed hardware and labor; physical/liquid damage and unrelated failures are excluded. There’s no lifetime-on-everything coverage.

When repair is usually smart

  • The Mac was reliable before this one problem.
  • The fault is contained: a screen, battery, or storage.
  • The repair is a fraction of a suitable replacement (Macs hold value).
  • There’s data you’d rather not migrate, and it still meets your needs.

When replacing makes more sense

  • It was already too slow before it broke.
  • Several things are failing at once.
  • The estimated repair approaches a suitable replacement.
  • Some older Macs aren’t economical or reliable to repair; we’ll tell you honestly.

If you’re replacing, your current Mac may be eligible for Sell / Trade after an in-person inspection. Final offers depend on its model, condition, functionality, account-lock status, and other inspection findings. Still unsure? See Mac & MacBook Repair.
