Repair or replace a laptop?

There’s a moment every laptop owner hits: something breaks, or it just gets slow, and you’re stuck wondering whether it’s worth fixing. This guide walks you through the same factors our technicians weigh when someone brings a laptop in. No pressure, and no single “right” answer we’re steering you toward.

The five questions that decide it

1. How old is the laptop, and what condition is it in?

Age matters, but condition matters more. If the laptop was solid before this one problem showed up, repair is often worth it. If it was already frustrating you before it broke, that’s a sign to at least price out a replacement.

2. What will the repair cost compared with a suitable replacement?

The fair comparison is the proposed repair price for your laptop against the full cost of a suitable replacement, including any setup, software, accessories, or data-transfer work that may be needed. Many laptop problems require diagnosis before a precise repair price can be confirmed. Start with a repair quote or bring the laptop in so we can evaluate the problem and explain the available options.

3. Is there data on it you can’t lose?

If the laptop holds something irreplaceable, that changes the math. Back up before any service if you can. If it won’t start and the files are the priority, tell us up front; data recovery is a separate, specialized service worth handling deliberately.

4. How do you actually use this laptop?

If your everyday work fits comfortably on the laptop you have, a targeted repair (or a well-chosen SSD upgrade) can keep it useful for years. If you’ve genuinely outgrown it, repairing only returns you to a machine that already wasn’t keeping up.

5. What’s actually wrong with it?

A cracked screen on an otherwise healthy laptop is a clean, contained repair. A machine that won’t power on, runs hot, and freezes could have one fixable cause, or several converging ones.

Common laptop problems, and what they usually mean

Tell us the symptom, we evaluate, and we explain what we find and the price before any work begins.

  • Cracked or dim screen: a replacement display for supported models; one of the most worth-it repairs when the rest is healthy.
  • Broken hinge or damaged case: repairable; worth depends on surrounding condition, which we assess honestly.
  • Keyboard, trackpad, or ports: common, contained fixes on supported laptops.
  • Battery that won’t hold a charge: a replacement battery with a 1-year warranty on the battery and labor.
  • Charging jack or won’t power on: several possible causes, so we evaluate before committing.
  • Running hot, loud, or shutting down: often a cooling or dust issue and frequently fixable.
  • Slow, or acting infected: often storage, memory, or software; sometimes an SSD upgrade is all it takes. Software and virus work has no ongoing warranty.
  • Liquid on the laptop: don’t keep charging or powering it on. See liquid damage repair; outcomes aren’t guaranteed.

When repair is usually smart

  • The laptop was reliable and fast enough before this one problem.
  • The fault is contained: a screen, battery, hinge, port, or cooling clean-out.
  • The repair is a modest fraction of a suitable replacement.
  • A simple SSD upgrade would meaningfully extend its life.
  • There’s data you’d rather not migrate, and it still meets your needs.

When replacing makes more sense

  • It was already too slow or frustrating before it broke.
  • Several things are failing at once.
  • The estimated repair approaches or exceeds a suitable replacement.
  • You’ve genuinely outgrown what it can do.

If you’re replacing, your current laptop may be eligible for Sell / Trade after an in-person inspection. Final offers depend on the laptop’s model, condition, functionality, account-lock status, and other inspection findings. You can also browse available New and Certified Refurbished devices, each with a 1-year warranty against defects. Still unsure? Call your local store.

Laptop repair-or-replace FAQ

Usually yes, when the rest of the laptop is healthy. A replacement display is available for supported models, so a broken screen doesn’t have to mean a new laptop. We’ll confirm the price for your model before any work.

Not necessarily. Slowness is often storage, memory, startup load, or software rather than a laptop you need to replace. We find out why first. Sometimes an SSD upgrade is all it takes.

A $50 diagnostic deposit applies at check-in and goes toward your repair. We evaluate, explain what we find, and get your approval before any chargeable work.

Often we can evaluate it. Data recovery is a separate service with a free initial estimate and no guaranteed outcome, so tell us up front if your files are the priority.
