GUIDE · MILITARY & PCS

Your PCS move tech checklist.

A PCS is a lot to manage, and your technology holds some of the things you can least afford to lose: family photos, orders and records, school and work files. This checklist walks you through backing up your data, prepping your devices, and packing everything so it arrives in one piece. If something’s already acting up, our Jacksonville store serves the Camp Lejeune community.

Start early: build your tech into the PCS timeline

The single best thing you can do for your technology during a PCS is to start before the packers arrive. Backups take time, and so does any repair, so give yourself a runway.

  • A few weeks out: Back up every device and confirm the backups are readable.
  • A couple of weeks out: Handle any device that’s already having trouble, so a repair isn’t racing your move date.
  • The week of the move: Sign devices out of accounts where appropriate, note passwords somewhere secure, and pack tech to travel with you rather than in the truck where possible.

Computer Warriors doesn’t promise same-day service, and we can’t guarantee a repair will be finished before a specific move date. Bringing a device in early is the surest way to have it ready in time.

Back up everything before a single box gets packed

Moves are exactly when devices get dropped, lost, or damaged. A simple, widely recommended approach is to keep more than one copy of anything you can’t replace: the original on your device, a copy on an external drive, and a copy in a cloud or off-site location.

What to back up

  • Photos and videos: confirm they’re actually uploaded, not just queued.
  • Documents: PCS orders, medical and school records, tax and financial files, work files.
  • Contacts, messages, and app data you’d hate to re-create.
  • Anything on a single external drive or USB stick: easy to lose in a move and often the only copy.

Confirm the backup actually worked: open a few files to be sure they open, check that a cloud backup has finished syncing (not just started), and make sure the backup lives somewhere other than the device it’s protecting. Want a second set of eyes? Our Residential Support team can help set up and verify a backup before your move.

Prep and secure each device

Phones & tablets

Confirm your cloud backup is current, note account logins securely, keep phones and tablets on you during the move, and charge to about half battery for storage. If a screen, battery, or charging port is already failing, it’s easier to handle before the move; see phone repair and tablet/iPad repair.

Laptops & computers

Back up first, then sign out of accounts you won’t need in transit. Note login and disk-encryption details securely. Carry laptops with you; power down desktops, label cables, and pack padded and upright. Address a slow or failing machine before you go; see computer repair and Mac repair.

Game consoles

Back up or sync your saves to your platform’s cloud where available, note account logins, remove discs, and pack controllers and cables so cords aren’t strained. If HDMI output, cooling, or power has been flaky, check it before the move; see game-console repair.

External drives, SSDs & memory cards

Small, easy to lose, and often your only copy. Keep them with you and pair with a cloud or second off-site copy. If a drive has started clicking, disconnecting, or refusing to mount, stop using it and see data recovery below.

Pack your tech so it survives the trip

Travel with the irreplaceable stuff, use original boxes or padded cases, bag and label chargers with their device, photograph expensive items before they’re packed, and keep devices out of extreme heat.

For computers, Macs, tablets, and consoles, a device typically waits about 2–3 business days before it reaches a technician’s bench. That’s the wait before work begins, not the total repair time. Many in-stock phone repairs finish in about 30–45 minutes. A $50 diagnostic deposit applies to computers, Macs, and consoles (tablets only when they can’t be tested at check-in). We don’t offer mail-in repair, so don’t ship a device to us. The safest move is to bring it in early. If getting in is hard, ask about pickup and delivery (starts around $50 within about 30 minutes). Data recovery starts with a free initial estimate.

PCS tech FAQ

We can’t promise a device will be finished before a particular date, and we don’t offer same-day service. Bringing it in early is the surest way to have it ready in time; the sooner it’s in the queue, the better the odds.

No. We serve the Camp Lejeune community through our Jacksonville store at 1132 Western Boulevard. There’s no on-base location.

Yes, our Residential Support team can help set up and verify a backup before your move, in person or remotely ($75 for the first 30 minutes for remote).

Stop using it and bring it in. Data recovery starts with a free initial estimate so you understand your options before deciding; recovery is never guaranteed. Continuing to power a failing drive can make recovery harder.
