Discord is a popular text, VoIP, and video chat service among gamers. It directly integrates with Twitch, a streaming platform allowing content creators the ability to interact directly with their followers. In today’s post, we discuss what Discord is and other uses outside of the gaming community.

Community-Based Forums

Discord is a free communications app similar to Skype or Teams. It allows its users to chat, talk, or video chat with one another. Users can create or join private servers to connect with other people, sometimes around the world. Similar to Reddit, Discord acts as an online community forum. Gamers primarily use Discord, but recently companies and other groups adopted it. Since the recent viral outbreak forced us to work from home, Computer Warriors have utilized Discord to keep up with each other throughout the day.

Interface

Discord’s interface is designed to be integrated with other services but isn’t too complicated to navigate.  The app offers several features included in other messaging apps. Users can share links, GIFs, and emojis in text conversations similar to texting or Facebook Messenger. Each server can be broken down into various ‘text channels’ that can focus on a specific topic. A user can be apart of several different servers at any one time.

While the service is free for users, it provides a paid option called Discord Nitro. This service features custom tagging, bigger upload capability, and better quality when streaming. It also allows the creation of bots that will help moderate and operate your server day today. An app created for gamers to communicate with one another is evolving into a great way for tech-savvy professionals to keep up with one another.
