Microsoft Office is, without a doubt, the king of office suites. Most of us used it for our reports, presentations, and math classes in school. Because it is so familiar, most people buy new iterations of the program or subscriptions. However, there are several great free alternatives; check them out below!
FreeOffice is produced by SoftMaker. The design is very similar to Microsoft Office, making transitioning a breeze. It is compatible with Windows, Mac, Linux, and mobile devices. FreeOffice is fully compatible with Microsoft Office, so any existing documents, spreadsheets, or presentations will move over with you. FreeOffice does have a premium service for a one-time cost of $79.95 or a subscription that starts at $2.99. These will unlock additional features, but most everyday users will be fine with the free version.
Google Drive is one of the biggest competitors to Microsoft Office. As part of its GSuite, Google offers Docs, Slides, and Sheets to compete with Microsoft. These apps use Google Drive, its cloud service, making them accessible from any device with an internet connection. Signing up for a Google Account is all you need to get started.
For Mac users, iWork is Apple’s in the house productivity suite. These apps include Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. These apps used to be exclusive for Mac computers but now can be used on iPhones and iPads. Similarly, to Google Drive, iWork will upload directly to your iCloud. All Microsoft Office file types work with iWork, so transitioning won’t be difficult with that. However, iWork’s design is nothing like Microsoft Office, so there will be a learning curve.
LibreOffice is an open-source option developed by The Document Foundation. It is free for personal use on Windows, Mac, and Linux devices. Since its an open-source application, LibreOffice does not provide any support. LibreOffice includes Writer, Calc, and Impress as alternatives to Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. All Microsoft Office files work with LibreOffice.
